Before you invest in finding the right eye cream or going for the right treatment for those under eye circles, you need to find out what caused your dark circles in the first place. No matter what anyone may deduce about the reason behind dark circles in general or recommend the right treatment it may not be necessarily beneficial to you as you as an individual will have your own individual reason for the cause of your problem. So, if you have treated yourself and see no significant change in your under eye circles it is largely because you have not tackled the reason for its appearance in the first place.

I have decided to write about dark circles in parts as there are varied reasons for the appearance of dark circles and they are many and they are to be tackled differently and hence they cannot all be discussed in a single post.

In this post I have broadly explained about Hyperpigmentation being the root cause of your dark circles and how to tackle it using natural remedies. It is best to find out the cause by seeing a dermatologist but there is also a quick way you can find out as discussed in this post. Here is the post map that shows the headings discussed within the post.

What is Hyperpigmentation

This is a result of the skin producing excess of pigment or melanin. Thus the skin which suffers hyperpigmentation has a slightly darker color than that of the surrounding normal skin. This darkening occurs when the brown pigment responsible for providing normal skin color leaves deposit on the skin. This is more common in people from Asia, Africa, Southern Italy and Middle East.

How to find out if hyperpigmentation is the reason behind your dark circles?

Dermatologists recommend pressing a finger over the circle and then releasing it. If the skin remains dark then you are most likely suffering from melanin overproduction. Also, if one of your parent has constant dark circles then you can inherit those as well.

Major causes of Hyperpigmentation

  1. Heredity
  2. Excessive sun exposure
  3. Inflammation or skin injury
  4. Hormonal changes

Remedies to address the each cause of hyperpigmentation

Heredity

  1. In this case there is nothing much to do for permanent removal. Relying on concealing is a go to option or you can choose to do laser (please consult a professional for laser treatment advice).
  2. 15545389897_0ab228336f_oYou can use make up to cover and conceal the under eye area.
  3. Also, a dermatologist specialized in the arena of hyperpigmentation will be able to help you determine the exact treatment in case of melanin overproduction.

Excessive sun exposure

  1. Avoid being out in the sun for too long. Take care to use creams/moisturizers with an SPF of at least 15 (or depending on the harshness of the sun’s rays in your area)
  2. Use sunglasses whenever you are out in the sun.

Inflammation or skin injury

It is better to get medical help or seek the advice of a doctor in this case.

Hormonal changes

  1. This can be due to reasons like pregnancy or other hormonal imbalances
  2. Ageing is another reason that can lead to hormonal changes.

Home Remedies to treat hyperpigmentation in general

The best option to get rid of dark circles caused due to hyperpigmentation is by using skin whitening agents or ingredients responsible for bleaching the skin. So let’s take a look at the gifts provided by nature with regard to aiding in skin whitening or bleaching.

The natural ingredients that act as bleaching agents are:

  • Potato
  • Cucumber
  • Avocado

  3. Avoid using lemon juice in case you have sensitive skin

Note:

I recommend you to combine lemon juice in conjunction with another ingredient as I personally don’t recommend using lemon juice alone especially over the eye area as it is very delicate. The drying effect of lemon on this area may lead to crow’s feet, wrinkles, etc.

Results:

Application of potato juice once daily over a week shows amazing results. For some it may even take a month, however, please be patient, not everyone’s skin is the same.

Natural Ingredients to watch out for before applying to the under eye area

While doing my research I came across a many sites showing few ingredients that they say can be used on the under eye area that are natural but something that I would not personally recommend. These ingredients can be harsh on the skin especially if you have sensitive skin. Moreover the area under eyes is very delicate hence it is best to be careful about what you apply here.

Be cautious of the following ingredients:

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

This is acidic in nature and hence not only dry out skin but there are possibilities it can irritate the skin too. My personal opinion is not to experiment this ingredient in the delicate eye area.

  1. Vitamin E oil

Many websites claim that vitamin E oil is good in helping in hyperpigmentation, however I do not recommend it because, the first reason being too thick, it is advisable not to be applied alone. Moreover, not much testing or proof has been collected regarding vitamin E oil usage on the skin, hence be careful while experimenting with this one.

I point out this information in light of the research that I did which includes excerpt from the Huffington post that asks to use Vitamin E oil with caution. Ncbi states issues related to vitamin E oil.

Vitamin E is excellent for the skin but the usage of Vitamin E oil on skin must be done cautiously. To make life easier for you I can suggest you other safe oils that can be applied on the skin without fear but at the same time are also is high in rich Vitamin E content. These oils are namely, castor oil, olive oil and avocado oil (all of which were discussed above).

  1. Turmeric

This is a great ingredient. Don’t get me wrong because I have included it here. I just want you to be careful while applying this as it can cause a tingling or cringing sensation to the skin and hence apply to the under eye area only if you are comfortable with it on the rest of your face.

  1. Lemon

This is another ingredient I want you guys to watch out as it is acidic by nature hence can irritate the skin especially when used alone. Try to avoid using this in the under eye area.
